“Contacting U.S. Authorities Regarding Tahawwur Rana’s Surrender”: MEA

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has said that since Tahawwur Rana, the suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack case, has run out of legal options in the US, India is in contact with US authorities about his surrender. On January 21, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Rana’s appeal, paving the way for his extradition to India.

Tahawwur Rana, a suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, has “exhausted all legal avenues” in the United States, so India is coordinating the logistics of his surrender with U.S. authorities. Speaking on the subject of Rana’s extradition, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that on January 21, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Rana’s review petition, clearing theroute for his return to India.
In order to arrange the logistics of his surrender to Indian authorities, India is currently in contact with U.S. authorities, Misri continued, and he would give updates as they become available.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is looking for Rana, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani descent, for his involvement in organizing and carrying out the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror attacks in Mumbai that claimed 166 lives.

He had previously unsuccessfully appealed his extradition in lower U.S. courts.

Tahawwur Rana has pursued every available legal option in the US, including an appeal that the US Supreme Court rejected.

In order to arrange the logistics of Rana’s surrender to Indian authorities, India is currently in communication with U.S. authorities.

India is in contact with U.S. authorities to determine the procedures for Rana’s extradition, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. In order to expedite Tahawwur Rana’s extradition to India, the Indian side was collaborating with the US on procedural matters, according to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

The next steps for Tahawwur Rana’s extradition to India are being considered, according to the U.S. State Department.

A businessman of Pakistani descent named Tahawwur Rana was found guilty of his involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. He was a childhood friend of David Headley, who worked with Rana as a co-conspirator.

The 2008 Mumbai attacks: The 26/11 attacks resulted in the deaths of 174 people and more than 300 others were injured.
