Hyprix, a Bangalore-based defence and aerospace start-up, has successfully tested Tezz, India’s first privately produced ramjet engine.
This milestone was accomplished in just five months, from concept to testing, in partnership with IIT-Madras’ National Centre for Combustion Research and Development (NCCRD). Tezz is a next-generation liquid-fueled ramjet engine capable of operating at speeds ranging from Mach 2 to Mach 4, representing a significant step forward in India’s defence technology environment.
Hyprix, founded in June 2024 by Devmalya Biswas and Divyanshu Mandowara, intends to revolutionise India’s defensive capabilities using novel propulsion technology. The creators spotted a significant void in India’s military sector, which has always depended on foreign technology for sophisticated propulsion systems. Tezz’s successful development not only boosts India’s self-reliance, but also establishes Hyprix as a pioneer in indigenous military production.
Operates efficiently between Mach 2 and Mach 4.
Provides three to four times the efficiency of traditional solid rocket-powered systems, enabling for greater range and sustained speeds.
Reduces reliance on foreign technology, in line with India’s strategic aim of self-sufficiency in defence.
Tezz’s development faced several problems, including expert scepticism, budgetary limits, and operational challenges. The scientific community questioned the founders’ ability to complete such a demanding undertaking as a private firm. However, their tenacity and unique approach resulted in the successful testing of Tezz in January 2025.
Following the success of Tezz, Hyprix is currently working on the Kira-M1, a 155mm ramjet-propelled extended-range artillery round. This effort intends to alleviate India’s artillery manufacturing shortage and improve military capabilities by leveraging innovative technologies. Kira-M1 is intended to considerably improve range and accuracy while lowering the expenses associated with imported artillery systems.
Hyprix’s accomplishments demonstrate the ability of private firms to revolutionise India’s military sector, stimulate innovation, and improve national security through domestic solutions.
