After a protracted 18-year manhunt, Anwari Ali Chouhan, a former Hizbul Mujahideen member, was apprehended in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. Originally from Gujjar-Kothian Talwara, Chouhan, also known as Jamsheer, joined the terrorist organization in 2001 and was active for over seven years before retiring into hiding.
The arrest, which occurred on February 20, 2025, was a major victory for police enforcement in their continuous fight against militancy in the area.
After that, Chouhan fled underground and repeatedly moved to avoid being arrested in a number of militancy-related offenses that were filed with the Reasi police station.
According to the spokesperson, Chouhan was wanted in connection with two terrorist-related incidents: a grenade attack at Baradari in Reasi on April 7, 2006, which killed a police officer’s father and injured four others, and a shooting incident in the Jadd woodland on January 5, 2006.
Chouhan’s protracted escape from justice serves as a reminder of the difficulties security personnel encounter while trying to apprehend terrorists.
