At the India-Pakistan border, what’s happening?

Persistent tensions between India and Pakistan are highlighted by the most recent ceasefire violation along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 1, 2025. Following a mine explosion in the Krishna Ghati area, the Pakistan Army opened fire without cause.

According to Lt. Colonel Suneel Bartwal, Indian troops responded successfully in a calibrated and controlled manner. According to intelligence reports, the firing was intended to divert Indian forces in order to aid terrorists’ attempts at infiltration.

These violations, according to experts, are a component of Pakistan’s long-standing proxy war strategy against India. Major General (Retd) Shashi Bhushan Asthana pointed out that because it lessens the likelihood of detection, such unprovoked firing frequently occurs in conjunction with infiltration attempts.

He said that these acts were a “helping hand” for terrorists who were infiltrating Kashmir. In order to maintain attention on Jammu and Kashmir despite relative stability following the repeal of Article 370 in 2019, Dr. Priyanka Singh of MP-IDSA emphasized that recent violations show a change in Pakistan’s strategy, concentrating more on more recent sectors in Jammu, such as Poonch and Rajouri.

Pakistan’s actions along the LoC are thought to be influenced by its internal problems, which include political instability, economic crisis, and security threats from organizations like the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). According to strategic analysts, these cross-border provocations reinforce perceptions of India as a threat while diverting attention from its domestic audience.

Violations have escalated since January 2025, despite the ceasefire agreement signed in 2021. This year, there have been at least six such breaches documented, including IED explosions and sniper attacks against Indian soldiers. These infractions demonstrate Pakistan’s ongoing attempts to use low-intensity warfare to undermine India while preserving plausible deniability.
