Amid the increasing conflict between Israel and Iran, the Indian government initiated Operation Sindhu to facilitate the safe evacuation of Indian nationals, notably students, from Iran.
On June 19, 2025, a special flight carrying 110 Indian nationals, predominantly students from Urmia University in northern Iran, arrived safely in New Delhi.
This operation was launched in reaction to Iran’s deteriorating security situation, particularly in Tehran, where situations were said to be worsening daily.
Evacuated students expressed their gratitude to Indian officials, underlining the Embassy’s effective coordination and preparedness.
Many people described their experiences, noting that, while Urmia was relatively safer than Tehran, the overall situation in Iran was tense, with visible missile activities and regular loud explosions at night.
The evacuation route comprised moving students from Urmia to Armenia, then to Qatar, and lastly to India. Throughout the journey, the Indian Embassy made all required efforts to minimize problems for the evacuees.
Several students expressed their joy and satisfaction at being reunited with their families, recognizing the vital role performed by the Ministry of External Affairs and Indian diplomatic offices in Iran and Armenia.
Parents of the evacuated students also expressed their thanks, highlighting the government’s efficient administration of the evacuation procedure and their hope that all remaining Indian nationals, particularly those still in Tehran, would be safely returned home.
Operation Sindhu demonstrates India’s commitment to the protection and security of its citizens living overseas, particularly during times of danger. The government’s prompt response and successful evacuation of its citizens have received widespread praise, demonstrating India’s proactive diplomatic outreach and crisis management capabilities.
