The successful high-altitude trial of the domestically developed Akash Prime air defense system in the Ladakh region has marked a turning point in India’s air defense capabilities. This trial, which was carried out at an elevation of more than 15,000 feet, is a significant step towards improving India’s operational readiness and self-sufficient defense infrastructure along strategic border areas.
Senior DRDO and Army Air Defence officials oversaw the extensive testing of Akash Prime, which was created by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in harsh weather and terrain conditions.
Even in the rarefied atmosphere of the Himalayan region, the surface-to-air missile system demonstrated its accuracy, dependability, and sophisticated targeting capabilities by hitting two high-speed aerial targets directly.

With intentions to incorporate it into the third and fourth Akash Regiments, the recent trial also expedites Akash Prime’s full-scale induction into the Indian Army. The layered air defense shield defending India’s borders is anticipated to be significantly strengthened by this integration.
Beyond its technical accomplishments, Akash Prime proved its usefulness on the battlefield during the most recent Operation Sindoor, where it was instrumental in thwarting Pakistan’s use of Turkish-made drones and fighter jets of Chinese origin. The system’s efficacy and the growing indigenization of India’s defense capabilities are demonstrated by its capacity to neutralize such a wide range of aerial threats in live combat.
Alongside the missile test, the Ministry of Defense has organized workshops and exhibitions centered around Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS), marking significant progress toward self-reliance in critical defense technologies.
The readiness and strength of India’s domestic defense industry are further demonstrated by these platforms, which are increasingly made with indigenous components and have proven invaluable in facilitating precision strikes and providing real-time situational awareness.
