During his recent visit to the United States, Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir made nuclear threats, which India has vehemently criticized as dangerous and part of Islamabad’s ongoing plan to use anti-India rhetoric to deflect attention from its own issues.
Through spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) claimed that Pakistan uses such war-mongering remarks as a “well-known modus operandi” to conceal its shortcomings.
Using the recent military stalemate in May 2025, when India reacted forcefully to Pakistan’s drone and missile attacks following an Indian strike on terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, India emphasized that any misstep by Pakistan would have devastating repercussions.
Asim Munir allegedly threatened to “take half the world down with us” if India posed an existential danger to Pakistan, a nuclear-armed country, during his visit to the US. Additionally, he vowed to attack Indian infrastructure, including the refinery in Jamnagar owned by Mukesh Ambani.
India responded forcefully to these remarks, denouncing them as reckless nuclear sabre-rattling, a provocation on friendly third-country territory, and a threat to regional and international security. India’s reactions also raised concerns about the safety and control over Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal, citing the Pakistani military’s alleged close ties with terrorist groups.
Pakistan denied India’s charges, stating that it has always acted with discipline and prudence and that its nuclear policy is entirely under civilian control. Pakistan threatened to retaliate immediately and proportionately for any Indian aggression.
Following the battle between the two nuclear-armed neighbors in May 2025, which began when India launched Operation Sindoor to target militants reportedly located in Pakistan, the Pakistan Army chief’s comments came under heightened tensions. Before a truce was mediated with US diplomatic assistance, the fight raged for four days, during which both sides launched drone and missile attacks.
Despite Munir’s nuclear threats on US soil, the US has reiterated that its ties with both India and Pakistan are unaffected. In May, the United States reaffirmed its commitment to both countries and its role in preventing a wider conflict.
In reaction to Munir’s comments, India emphasized its dedication to preserving national security and its opposition to nuclear intimidation. It also cautioned Pakistan to control its rhetoric and refrain from taking any more aggressive measures that would dangerously aggravate tensions. The situation is still precarious because of the ongoing disputes between India and Pakistan, which have drawn attention from around the world to the stability of the area and the dangers of nuclear posturing.
