Jaishankar Reaffirms Push for UN Security Council Reforms While Attending UNGA With G4 Colleagues

During the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar attended the G4 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

The G4—Japan, Germany, Brazil, and India—reiterated their strong commitment to reforming the UN, with a special emphasis on enlarging and transforming the UN Security Council. The ongoing Inter-Governmental Negotiation (IGN) process targeted at these reforms was reviewed by the ministers during the meeting.

Jaishankar said on social networking site X that the discussion with his G4 colleagues, Takeshi Iwaya of Japan, Johann Wadephul of Germany, and Mauro Vieira of Brazil, was fruitful and demonstrated the group’s resolve to vigorously push UN reforms. The focus was on making sure that the Security Council’s growth reflects more equity and representation and satisfies changing global demands.

Jaishankar participated in a number of bilateral discussions at the UNGA80 and the concurrent G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in South Africa in addition to the G4 gathering. In the midst of regional geopolitical dynamics, he greeted Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Mohamad Haji Hasan, enhancing diplomatic relations.

Engaging with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper was another aspect of the discussion. They talked about the results and development of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit, with a focus on Vision 2035 initiatives.

In keeping with India’s goal to strengthen ties with African countries, Jaishankar also held a cordial conversation with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. He also spoke with Senator Wong, the foreign minister of Australia, who emphasized the continued collaboration between India and Australia in a number of bilateral and multilateral areas.

Addressing the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Jaishankar underscored the G20’s critical role amid global political and economic volatility. He urged G20 nations to leverage dialogue and diplomacy to foster stability. Furthermore, he emphasised the importance of firmly combating terrorism alongside strengthening energy and economic security as vital pillars for a more stable and positive international order.

Jaishankar’s engagements at UNGA80 highlighted India’s proactive diplomacy and persistent advocacy for multilateral reforms and global stability, aligning with India’s vision of a responsible and influential global governance role.
