Brazilian aerospace and defence giant Embraer intends to establish a new subsidiary in New Delhi by the second quarter of 2025. This move is in response to the growing demand in India’s military market.
The company will oversee commercial and executive aircraft, defence, service and support, supply chain, and engineering activities.
It intends to provide engineering services, strategic sourcing, service and spare parts support, and company growth.
Embraer and Mahindra Defence Systems signed a Memorandum of Understanding in February 2024 to provide the C-390 Millennium to the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The IAF is contemplating using the Embraer C-390 Millennium as a Multi-Role Transport Aircraft (MTA) to replace its ageing Antonov An-32s and Ilyushin Il-76s.
The IAF need 40-80 aircraft with cargo capacities ranging from 18 to 30 tonnes.
Other competitors for the MTA include the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules and the Airbus A400M Atlas.
The C-390 Millennium is capable of aerial assault, air-to-air refuelling, aerial replenishment, search and rescue, special operations, humanitarian relief, medical evacuation, and strategic transport.
Embraer intends to develop India as a regional hub for tactical transport aircraft.
If the Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) contract is awarded, the business intends to construct and perhaps export C-390s.
Embraer’s plan calls for greater engagement, including training, MRO, knowledge transfer, and R&D.
Embraer wants to expand its supply chain base in India and is collaborating with Mahindra to establish a local supply chain program.
Bosco da Costa Junior, CEO of Embraer Defence & Security, claimed that Embraer is serious about supplying C-390 components to India, which will help India’s goal for self-reliance. Embraer operates more than 40 aircraft and 11 aircraft types in India, including defence, commercial, and executive jets.
