A major partnership between the UAE, Sri Lanka, and India has been announced to build a multi-product pipeline that will deliver dependable and reasonably priced energy from India to Sri Lanka. On December 16, 2024, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had a joint news conference where they highlighted this plan.
By making it easier to transport different energy products, the pipeline will improve Sri Lanka’s energy security and foster regional cooperation between the three countries.
India intends to provide liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Sri Lankan power plants as part of a larger plan to improve energy relations and guarantee both nations have access to dependable energy supplies.
In order to further integrate their energy systems, the leaders decided to collaborate on building a high-capacity power grid interconnection between Sri Lanka and India.
One topic of discussion was increasing Sampur’s solar power projects’ capacity, which is essential for supplying Sri Lanka’s energy demands.
Along with a dedication to environmental preservation, the agreement highlights the cooperative development of offshore wind power potential in the Palk Straits.
This partnership coincides with Sri Lanka’s efforts to improve its energy infrastructure and stabilise its economy. With substantial financial aid and development projects already under way in a number of areas in Sri Lanka, India’s cooperation has been crucial in this regard. Through these energy measures, the leaders reaffirmed their resolve to further deepen bilateral relations and emphasised the necessity of timely implementation of ongoing projects.
