Moscow says India could quickly produce Russian fifth-generation fighter jets.

Russia has highlighted how its Su-57 fighter jet could help India’s military modernization efforts more than the F-35, which the United States offers. The potential to swiftly upgrade current production lines in India to assemble the fifth-generation Su-57E warplane was highlighted by Russian arms exporter ROSOBORONEXPORT. With plans to expand its fighter squadrons from 31 to 42 by 2035, India is looking to improve the capabilities of its air force.

The successful partnership between ROSOBORONEXPORT and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which has manufactured more than 220 Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft, was highlighted. If India chooses to move forward, the company proposed that the factories that are currently assembling the Su-30MKI could be modified to produce the Su-57E. Because domestically produced Su-57Es would be less susceptible to Western sanctions, which have sparked worries about future Russian deliveries, this option is viewed as beneficial.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested the F-35 as a substitute during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s most recent trip to Washington. India has historically relied on Russia for cutting-edge weapons, so the U.S. wants to increase military cooperation with this country. But since the F-35 is usually only available to America’s closest allies, its offer is noteworthy.

At the Aero India air show, both the F-35 and the Su-57 were displayed as potential rivals for India’s military modernization. India and ROSOBORONEXPORT have agreed to collaborate on the development and localization of the Su-57E.

India first participated in a collaborative project with Russia to develop a fifth-generation aircraft, but it left the project in 2018. The current state of affairs is indicative of a strategic rivalry between the United States and Russia for defense contracts with India.
