India’s Indigenous Light Tank: A Key Weapon System For High-Altitude Combat

India’s defense capabilities have advanced significantly with the introduction of the Zorawar, an indigenous light tank designed for high-altitude missions. The Zorawar, created by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in partnership with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and backed by a number of MSMEs, is intended to satisfy the operational requirements that were brought to light during the 2020 standoff with China in Eastern Ladakh.

The Indian Light Tank (ILT), a contemporary tank, is intended to improve the Indian Army’s fighting capability along the border with China.

With a weight of under 25 tons, the Zorawar is far lighter than conventional main battle tanks, making air transportation simpler and improving mobility in difficult conditions.

The Zorawar has demonstrated its operating capabilities in both desert and mountainous environments by successfully completing its initial automotive and field firing experiments as of September 2024.
