The 13th Joint Working Group (JWG) on Counter-Terrorism and the sixth round of UN-related consultations were recently held in Moscow, Russia, and India, December 19–20, 2024. Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West) of India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and Sergey Vershinin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, co-chaired the sessions, which were attended by a number of government officials from both countries.

Current regional and international terrorist threats were discussed, along with the abuse of new technologies for terrorist purposes. Both parties reiterated their dedication to working together on bilateral and global counterterrorism initiatives.
Russia reaffirmed its backing for India’s application to join the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) when it has been overhauled. This support is consistent with earlier declarations made by other world leaders who have also supported India’s application for permanent membership, such as those from the US, UK, and France.
The consultations addressed counterterrorism as well as other regional and international concerns pertaining to the UNSC, such as its reform. The MEA emphasized that during these discussions, both countries shared opinions on important global concerns.
