The formal announcement of the handover, which occurred on Thursday, was made in a statement late on Friday night.
Senior officials such as Abraham Varughese, Chairman and Managing Director of BDL A Madhavarao, and renowned scientist R V Hara Prasad, Director General (NS&M), attended the occasion. The milestone was witnessed by teams from the Indian Navy, BDL, and NSTL. The significance of this accomplishment in enhancing India’s naval capability was highlighted by their involvement.
In its capacity as the Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP), BDL collaborated closely with NSTL to successfully develop India’s first wire-guided heavy weight torpedo produced domestically.
Under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the system has been developed in both practice and combat modes, and its formal handover marks a significant advancement in India’s self-reliance in advanced naval weapon systems.
The torpedo’s sophisticated propulsion and homing technologies are intended to provide exceptional performance in underwater combat situations. It includes advanced search, attack, and re-attack capabilities that significantly improve the Indian Navy’s operational preparedness. The armament system is an essential addition to India’s maritime arsenal because of these features.
The accomplishment, according to officials, is a result of the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and BDL’s robust cooperation, which is backed by a large network of business partners, including MSMEs. India’s increasing proficiency in cutting-edge naval technology and its capacity to incorporate contributions from various industrial stakeholders are demonstrated by the successful productionization of such a sophisticated underwater weapon system.Contracts for Defense ManufacturingDignitaries praised the work of engineers, scientists, and production teams who were instrumental in the project. Their commitment and technological know-how were acknowledged as crucial elements in the torpedo’s successful delivery, which is evidence of India’s advancement in domestic defense innovation.
