India Converts Bombs into Precision Munitions and Conducts the First Trial of Its Own Glide Weapon, TARA

The first flight test of Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA), India’s first domestic glide weapon system intended to transform unguided warheads into precision guided munitions, was successfully completed by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF), according to PIB.

An important turning point in India’s defense technology development was reached on May 7th, when the trial took place off the coast of Odisha.

TARA is a modular kit that can be used to convert conventional bombs weighing 250 kg, 450 kg, or 500 kg into guided munitions. To accomplish precise aiming, it makes use of an inbuilt Inertial Navigation System (INS), GPS navigation, and electro-optical guiding.R&D collaboration initiativesThe accuracy of the system was shown by its capacity to expand a bomb’s range to between 150 and 180 kilometers when released from a height of 5 kilometers, with a circular error probability of only three meters.

TARA is being integrated with several frontline fighter aircraft, such as the Jaguar, Mirage-2000, Sukhoi Su-30MKI, and TEAJS. It is essentially similar to the Israeli SPICE system, which is now in use with the IAF. This integration will provide the IAF with enhanced strike capabilities against ground-based targets, while reducing dependence on imported systems.

DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, worked with other DRDO labs to design and develop the glide weapon. Since TARA is the first glide weapon to use cutting-edge, inexpensive technology, its creation demonstrates India’s concentration on economical solutions.

The project has been carried out with the assistance of Indian companies and development-cum-production partners, who have already started manufacturing activities, guaranteeing quick induction into service.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh praised the DRDO, the IAF, and business partners for the trial’s success, calling it a major advancement in India’s domestic defense capabilities.
