The Strategic Forces Command, which works under India’s Nuclear Command Authority and is in charge of overseeing and managing the nation’s tactical and strategic nuclear weapons stockpile, carried out the launch. Agni-4, which was created by the Defense Research and Development Organization, can transport both conventional and nuclear payloads. It is regarded as a key component of India’s strategic deterrence stance and nuclear triad.

Agni-4 can reach deep into important strategic locations throughout practically all of mainland China from launch sites in India, especially when launched from eastern or northeastern regions. Parts of Southeast Asia, West Asia, and Central Asia are also within its strike range.
Agni-4 has flown eight times since its initial test in 2010. It is a longer-range version of the Agni-II missile, formerly known as Agni-II Prime.
The missile’s sophisticated re-entry heat shield ensures that its electrical equipment and avionics continue to function properly at temperatures below 50°C while withstanding high outer skin temperatures over 3,000°C. Agni-4’s precision strike capabilities is highlighted by its accuracy of less than 100 meters with a circular error probability at its maximum range of 4,000 kilometers.
Agni-4’s structure consists of a first stage with a diameter of 1.2 meters made of maraging steel and a second stage with a diameter of about 1 meter made of carbon fiber. These provide average thrusts of 39.5 kN and 710 kN, respectively. High-accuracy targeting and fine orientation control during flight are made possible by the missile’s inertial guidance system, which is outfitted with flex-seal thrust vectoring devices and ring laser gyroscopes.
The defense ministry added that the missile system has a high degree of dependability due to its small, contemporary avionics with redundancy. By doing this, India’s deterrence posture is strengthened and operational preparedness is guaranteed.
