Ahead of Foreign Secretary Misri’s visit, the press secretary for Bangladesh states, “We are working to strengthen our relationship with India.”

In the midst of escalating tensions between the two nations, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is scheduled to travel to Bangladesh for a high-level Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) on December 9 or 10. This is the first major diplomatic meeting since Sheikh Hasina’s overthrow in August 2024, when the interim administration headed by Muhammad Yunus came to power. Md. Touhid Hosain, Bangladesh’s foreign adviser, underlined the need for a positive relationship with India, saying that it must be based on respect and reciprocity.

This visit takes place against a backdrop of increased tensions brought on by recent events including the abuse of Hindu minority in Bangladesh and demonstrations against similar problems in India. Chinmoy Krishna Das, a Hindu monk, was arrested, which has increased unrest and

Yunus’s press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, reaffirmed the government’s intention to building solid ties with India, but he also noted that prior connections under Hasina’s administration were one-dimensional. Mutual respect and equality are the goals of the relationship that the interim government seeks to establish. Alam added that leaders from both countries are still in talks and that ideas for regional cooperation projects, such as a hydroelectric grid involving Bangladesh, India, Bhutan, and Nepal, have been put up.

In the face of persistent difficulties, the next conference is regarded as an essential step in resolving bilateral issues and bringing stability to India-Bangladesh relations.
