On December 16, 2024, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake honoured Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat in New Delhi. He honoured the heritage of the Father of the Nation of India by laying a wreath at Gandhi’s memorial while he was there.
Dissanayake’s state visit to India, which included this event, is noteworthy because it was his first bilateral trip since assuming office.
To further demonstrate the mutual love and appreciation between the two countries, President Dissanayake was given a book about Mahatma Gandhi’s life as well as a miniature bust of Gandhi in addition to the wreath.
The longstanding bond between India and Sri Lanka, which is based on shared historical and cultural ties, is shown by this gesture.
