On April 3, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra of Thailand conducted bilateral discussions in Bangkok with the goal of enhancing India-Thailand’s strategic cooperation.
Enhancing strategic engagement, defence and security cooperation, and political exchanges were the main topics of discussion. Expanding cooperation in the areas of connectivity, health, science and technology, start-ups, innovation, digital technologies, education, culture, and tourism was stressed by both leaders.
The presidents discussed bilateral cooperation in a number of industries during the meeting. They talked on ways to combat transnational organised crime, including cyber frauds, drug trafficking, and human trafficking. In order to strengthen collaboration in maritime security and crime prevention, the parties also decided to create a “Strategic Dialogue” between their security services.
The two leaders observed the signing of Memorandums of Understanding in areas like digital technology, MSMEs, marine heritage, and handlooms and handicrafts. With actions like presenting PM Modi with Buddhist holy texts and releasing a commemorative postage stamp featuring mural paintings of the Ramayana, they also honoured cultural links.
During this visit, India and Thailand upgraded their ties to a strategic partnership. PM Modi emphasised Thailand’s significance to India’s Indo-Pacific vision and “Act East” policy. Prioritising growth over expansionism, both nations reiterated their dedication to an Indo-Pacific order that is free, open, inclusive, and founded on norms.
