BEML and DRDO Sign Licensing Agreements to Produce Army Advanced Combat Support Vehicles

In order to produce cutting-edge combat support vehicles for the Indian Army’s Armoured Corps, BEML Limited has signed three important licensing agreements with the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), a premier laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

This strategic partnership entails the transfer of technology for the domestic development and manufacturing of three vital systems: a full trailer for a 70-ton tank transporter with a cutting-edge hydraulic suspension system, and the Unit Maintenance Vehicle (UMV) and Unit Repair Vehicle (URV) especially made for the Main Battle Tank (MBT) Arjun.

In order to provide greater operational availability and efficiency of these frontline assets, the UMV and URV are essential for supporting MBT Arjun on-field maintenance and repair throughout training and operational deployments. With its cutting-edge hydraulic suspension, the 70T Tank Transporter trailer is designed to transfer large tanks like the Arjun safely and effectively, especially over difficult terrain, improving the Army’s logistical and strategic mobility.

Senior officials, including Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, and Sanjay Som, Director (Mining & Construction) at BEML, as well as other important DRDO scientists and industry representatives, attended the formal handover of these agreements at a ceremony held at VRDE in Ahmednagar. The occasion demonstrated the government’s continued support for the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” program, which seeks to develop domestic manufacturing and innovation skills in order to attain self-reliance in vital defense technology.

According to BEML’s statement, this collaboration is a significant step toward strengthening the Indian Army’s operational capabilities with cutting-edge, entirely domestic solutions. In addition to bolstering the country’s defense industry, the partnership supports larger initiatives to lessen reliance on imported technologies and foster domestic defense manufacturing skills.

By providing the Army with cutting-edge support vehicles that are created, developed, and manufactured domestically, the BEML-DRDO agreements mark a significant advancement in India’s defense self-sufficiency and strengthen the goal of a strong, independent defense industry.
