According to Money Control, the Defense Ministry has released a tender for the purchase of 60 multirole transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force, valued at about ₹1 lakh crore.
This program is a part of a larger initiative to improve the IAF’s tactical and strategic airlift capabilities and replace its aging fleet of cargo aircraft.
Officials have affirmed that Indian businesses will take the lead in the initiative, guaranteeing substantial domestic manufacturing participation.
The C-390 Millenium transport aircraft is being offered by Mahindra Defense in collaboration with Embraer of Brazil.

The Indian Air Force currently operates 12 C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, which have been deployed extensively for special operations, humanitarian missions, and tactical transport. In parallel, the IAF is working with Airbus on the C-295 transport aircraft program, with around 70 aircraft planned for induction. Most of these will be manufactured in India, further consolidating the country’s transport aviation ecosystem.
Other significant modernization initiatives coincide with the 60 transport aircraft tender. To increase its combat fleet, the IAF has already released a tender for 114 Rafale fighter jets. Furthermore, plans are in motion to replace the Hawk jet trainers with over 100 trainer aircraft, increasing the capacity for pilot training in proportion to the expanding number of fighter units.Opportunities for Defense Partnerships
Beyond transporting troops and supplies, the new fleet of Medium Transport Aircraft (MTAs) might be used for aerial refueling.
This would give the IAF more freedom to maintain long-range operations and improve its capacity for quick deployment in a variety of theaters, such as forward bases and high-altitude areas.
For many years to come, the results of this battle between TATA, Mahindra, and HAL will determine how India’s military transport fleet develops.
