The Indian Air Force has started the process of replacing its aging fleet of British Aerospace Hawk MK-132 trainers with 150 cutting-edge jet trainers.
Global aerospace manufacturers have been asked to provide information about their products for what the service refers to as Stage-III (F) trainers. Before they advance to front-line combat aircraft like the Tejas, Rafale, or Sukhoi Su-30MKI, fighter pilots will complete their training on these aircraft.
The deadline for responding to the RFI is October 5. December 2027 is the date of the next Request for Proposal. It is doubtful that the aircraft will be put into service before the 2030s due to ongoing testing and assessments. As is customary at this exploratory stage of procurement, the IAF has made it clear that testing will be carried out on a no-cost-no-commitment basis.
Pilot training in the IAF follows a three-stage pipeline. The first stage, lasting 24 weeks, is conducted on the Pilatus PC-7 MK-II turboprop trainer, now being replaced by the indigenous HTT-40. This phase covers basic flying manoeuvres, aviation theory, navigation and meteorology. After this, cadets are streamed into fighters, transports or helicopters.

The second stage, also 24 weeks, involves specialised training. Fighter stream cadets train on the Kiran MK-II, transport stream cadets on the Dornier-228, and helicopter stream cadets on the Chetak. This phase advances navigation, tactics and aircraft handling skills.
Stage III training is post-commissioning and is conducted on advanced jet trainers such as the Hawk Mk-132. Here, pilots master high-speed manoeuvres, tactical combat skills and advanced instrument flying.
They are introduced to combat systems and combat support systems.
After this stage, pilots are posted to operational squadrons, where they continue training on specific aircraft types and progress professionally.
The IAF’s present squadron strength of 29 is significantly less than the approved 42.5. Together with the Navy, it has 119 cutting-edge jet trainers. With the introduction of TEJAS MK-1A, more Rafales, the TEJAS MK-2, and eventually the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, the need for 150 more trainers indicates readiness for a larger fighter force. To keep up with the expansion of the battle fleet, the training equipment must be expanded.In the past, the lack of advanced trainers had detrimental effects.
Trainee pilots frequently went straight from intermediate trainers to high-performance fighters like the MiG-21 prior to the Hawk’s entry in 2008. The high crash rate was a result of this training gap.
According to a 2010 Parliamentary Committee investigation, human error accounted for 44% of crashes between 2004 and 2010, with inadequate training infrastructure being a major contributing factor.
Advanced capabilities are anticipated to be incorporated into the new trainers. Fly-by-wire controls, a glass cockpit with adjustable hands-on throttle and stick systems, and navigation that integrates NavIC with GPS and GLONASS are all specified in the RFI. Seats with zero-zero ejection are required. When controls are released, the aircraft must automatically recover and resist departures.
One important prerequisite is embedded simulation. The trainers must replicate missile seeker heads in midair, have virtual avionics and electronic warfare suites, and connect to 360-degree dome simulators in a Live-Virtual-Constructive environment via secure data lines. Additionally, holographic debriefing is mentioned.
Operational requirements include open architecture for future upgrades from various suppliers, AI-based predictive maintenance, engine changes within an hour, and refueling and rearming within 30 minutes. The IAF’s goal of preparing pilots for the intricacies of contemporary air combat is reflected in these criteria.
There are probably a number of contenders. Leading contenders include the Alenia Aermacchi M-346 Master, KAI T-50 Golden Eagle, and Boeing–SAAB T-7 Red Hawk. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. is working on the HLFT-42, which will be displayed at Aero India 2023, and has proposed the TEJAS as a lead-in fighter trainer.
A larger change in training philosophy is indicated by the necessity for 150 trainers, which is significantly more than the current fleet. By guaranteeing that future pilots are taught on platforms that replicate the capabilities of next-generation aircraft, it demonstrates a proactive attitude to modernization.
The significance of this purchase is highlighted by the lessons learned from the past, when the lack of advanced trainers resulted in preventable collisions. With a strong and cutting-edge training pipeline, the IAF is preparing to meet the needs of future air combat.
