India’s ambitious next-generation supersonic lead-in fighter trainer, the HLFT-42 from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, is intended to replace the outdated Hawk MK-132 and train pilots for cutting-edge aircraft like the AMCA and TEJAS MK-2.

At Aero India 2023 in Bangalore, the Hindustan Lead-in Fighter Trainer-42, or HLFT-42, was first shown as a scale model. Initiating the concept in 2017, HAL claimed in 2023 that the project had proceeded to a more advanced stage of development.

The Hawk MK-132, which has been in service for more than 15 years but lacks the sophistication needed to teach pilots on fifth-generation aircraft, will be replaced by the HLFT-42, according to the Indian Air Force.

The HLFT-42 is positioned by HAL as a dual-role platform. In addition to being combat-ready with 11 hardpoints for weaponry like ASTRA beyond-visual-range missiles and ASRAAM close-combat missiles, it will function as a supersonic trainer that can replicate the systems and performance of advanced fighters. In addition to providing the Air Force with a flexible light combat aircraft alternative, this guaranties that pilots may train in realistic combat settings.

The aircraft has a bubble canopy and is built as a single-engine, conventional swept-wing jet. With an operational ceiling of 18 kilometers and a maximum take-off weight of 16,500 kg, HAL envisage it reaching speeds of up to Mach 1.8.

A fly-by-wire system, electronic warfare suites, infrared search and track sensors, and an Active Electronically Scanned Array radar are examples of advanced avionics.

HAL released a Request for Information in 2025 for a high-thrust engine with a minimum lifespan of 6,000 hours that could generate 95–100 kilonewtons of thrust. To make sure the HLFT-42 can achieve its performance goals, this search is essential. Global producers like GE Aviation, which currently powers Tejas models with F404 and F414 engines, are anticipated to compete.

Additionally, HAL is developing the HLFT-42 as the mothership for their unmanned weapon system concept, the Combat Air Teaming System (CATS).

This integration demonstrates HAL’s view of the HLFT-42 as a key component of India’s future air combat ecosystem, rather than only a trainer. In this capacity, the aircraft is anticipated to take the place of planned TEJAS MK-1A and SEPECAT Jaguar versions.

According to HAL’s projections, the HLFT-42 prototype will launch in the early 2030s and be inducted into the Indian Air Force in 2035. In order to maintain pilot training, this schedule coincides with the Hawk MK-132’s retirement.

The HLFT-42 will prepare pilots for the high-speed, high-G conditions of contemporary air combat by bridging the gap between subsonic trainers and frontline combat jets.
