Amid increased tensions after Israel’s recent military strikes on Iranian targets, including nuclear and missile sites, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Netanyahu gave Modi an update on the changing security landscape and the justification for Israel’s actions, which it characterized as a “precise, pre-emptive strike” meant to undermine Iran’s nuclear program and counter perceived threats from the country.
In response, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the urgent need for the early restoration of peace and stability in the region and expressed India’s profound concern over the escalation. He underlined that India is keeping a careful eye on the situation and reaffirmed the value of communication and diplomacy in halting further escalation.
Modi’s comments emphasized India’s long-standing stance of upholding cordial ties with both Israel and Iran, and the Ministry of External Affairs issued official statements echoing his appeal for moderation, urging both parties to refrain from taking any measures that would escalate the crisis.
India also reaffirmed its commitment to international peace efforts by stating that it is prepared to provide any assistance necessary to promote de-escalation and address underlying problems. As things progress, the two leaders decided to stay in contact. Israel’s Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Sa’ar also called External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, highlighting the gravity of India’s diplomatic engagement in the midst of the crisis.
The conversation follows Israel’s military attack, attack Rising Lion, which targeted Iranian nuclear and military facilities and is said to have caused serious casualties among Iranian top leaders.
Iran responded by attacking Israel with a massive drone strike, escalating concerns about a wider regional conflict. While promoting peace and stability, India’s well-rounded diplomatic outreach reflects its strategic interests in the area, such as the security of its diaspora and its economic interests in West Asia.
