DRDO is creating materials that absorb radiation for AMCA.

In order to improve the stealth characteristics of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), a fifth-generation fighter jet currently in development, the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is actively developing Radiation Absorbent Materials (RAM). At a recent conference on cutting-edge composites technology, DRDO Chairman Samir Kamat unveiled this endeavor.

In order to reduce radar detection and increase overall combat effectiveness, the RAM is built to satisfy the AMCA’s strict stealth criteria. One of the main objectives of contemporary stealth aircraft is to reduce the radar cross-section (RCS), and this requires the incorporation of certain materials.

Composite materials have long been used by DRDO in aircraft designs; the TEJAS fighter aircraft is a prominent example, with composites making up 45% of its construction. It is anticipated that the RAM improvements will significantly improve the AMCA’s performance and durability, in line with current trends in stealth technology.

In order to cooperate with academics and industry, DRDO has set up centers of excellence in 15 different sites. The goal of this cooperative approach is to investigate several composite choices, such as carbon fiber materials and ceramic matrix composites, which are crucial for next hypersonic missile and aero-engine programs.

In the area of technical integration, DRDO is creating specialized paints that absorb radar wavelengths in addition to RAM, which enhances the aircraft’s stealth profile. This multifaceted strategy creates a powerful stealth fighter by combining composite materials, sophisticated alloys, and radar-absorbent coatings.

The Cabinet Committee on Security approved an allocation of over ₹15,000 crore (about $1.9 billion) in March 2024, demonstrating the substantial financial support for the AMCA project. The project’s management is carried out by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).

A key element in strengthening India’s defense capabilities through the AMCA program is the development of Radiation Absorbent Materials by DRDO, which focuses on cutting-edge technology to guarantee that the aircraft successfully satisfies the needs of modern combat.
