Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki, a terrorist who took part in the 26/11 Mumbai attack, died

On December 27, 2024, terrorist Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki, a key member of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist group and a participant in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, died in Lahore, Pakistan, from a heart attack. Before his death, he was being treated for diabetes-related issues in a private hospital.

Makki, the brother-in-law of LeT founder Hafiz Saeed, was born on December 10, 1954. He was a member of the Shura, the organization’s governing council, and the head of its international relations division, among other important leadership positions.

He was involved in terrorism by planning significant attacks like the Red Fort assault in 2000 and the Mumbai attacks in 2008, which killed 166 people and injured over 300 more.

He was subject to an arms embargo, travel ban, and asset freeze after the United Nations named him a global terrorist in 2023. He recruited people to commit violent crimes against India and raised money for LeT operations. Despite having a terrorism conviction

For LeT and its operations, Makki’s death is regarded as a significant loss. His contributions as a major fundraiser and ideologue had been essential to the group’s continued existence over the years. His passing could have long-term effects on LeT’s operational capability and organizational structure.
