In a major move to improve its aerial combat capabilities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) plans to acquire 15 Astra MK-2 missiles. This purchase is a component of continuous initiatives to enhance the missile’s advancement and incorporation into IAF operations.
Tender Issued: In order to demonstrate preparedness for additional testing in the upcoming seven to eight months, the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has issued a tender for the casting of propellants and dual pulse rocket motors especially for the Astra MK-2 missile.
manufacturing Schedule: After testing is over, Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) plans to start manufacturing by December 2024.
With a range of almost 160 kilometers, the Astra MK-2 is an improved Astra missile that greatly outperforms the original Astra’s 110 km range. Because this missile is built for beyond-visual-range (BVR) engagements, IAF aircraft can eliminate threats without coming into direct contact with them.
To improve their operational efficacy in combat situations, the missile will be integrated with a number of platforms, such as the domestic TEJAS Light Combat Aircraft and the Sukhoi Su-30MKI.
It is anticipated that the Astra MK-2’s successful development and integration will strengthen India’s air superiority and lessen its dependency on foreign missiles like the Meteor. By 2026, after thorough user testing are finished, the IAF hopes to have the Astra MK-2 fully operational in its arsenal.
