Recently, India gave Nigeria a $200 million Line of Credit (LOC) to help with the purchase of TEJAS MK-1A fighter fighters. This offer was made on November 12, 2024, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Nigeria, which was a major step toward deepening the two countries’ defense cooperation.
In particular, the LOC is intended to help Nigeria purchase the TEJAS MK-1A from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Nigeria is replacing its ancient fleet of Chengdu F-7NI (Soviet/Russian MiG-21) fighter planes, which are increasingly considered outdated in contemporary aerial warfare scenarios, as part of a larger push to modernize its air combat capabilities.
Nigeria is anticipated to initially purchase 4–5 TEJAS MK-1A aircraft with the financial support of India. As part of a long-term procurement strategy, there may be plans to eventually raise this number to 15 aircraft. Nigeria is able to properly manage its defense budget while increasing its air strength because to this staged approach.
The TEJAS MK-1A is marketed as a more sophisticated and affordable fighter than competitors such as the Chinese JF-17 Thunder. It is a competitive option for countries wishing to modernize their air defense systems because of its excellent avionics, lightweight design, and superior operating expertise from India.
This move is in line with India’s geopolitical goal of increasing its power in Africa’s defense industry, especially in opposition to more established nations like China and Russia. The agreements made during Modi’s visit cover a wide range of topics outside of defense, such as food security and economic development, demonstrating a thorough strategy to strengthen India-Nigeria ties.
India and Nigeria’s defense cooperation has advanced significantly with India’s offer of a $200 million LOC for the purchase of TEJAS planes.
