Indian Support for the Maldives: EAM Jaishankar’s Commitment

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel recently met and emphasized India’s commitment to helping the Maldives. The Maldives is a “very concrete expression” of India’s Neighbourhood First policy, which places a high priority on ties with South Asian neighbors, Jaishankar underlined, underscoring India’s role as a staunch friend.

Jaishankar promised Khaleel that India would continue to support him, especially given the Maldives’ present economic difficulties. He pointed out that in the past, India had responded quickly to the Maldives’ demands and offered aid in times of need.

Khaleel conveyed gratitude for India’s emergency financial assistance, which has been essential for the Maldives in these trying times. This illustrates India’s dedication to becoming a trustworthy ally.

To further solidify their cooperation, the two countries inked a Memorandum of Understanding to carry out high-impact community development initiatives in the Maldives.

In keeping with the Joint Vision agreed during President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to India in October 2024, both ministers underlined their dedication to strengthening cooperation in the areas of economics and marine security.
