India’s Shipbuilding Industry Is Expected to Expand: MDL Delivers Two Ships and Gets Ready to Launch INS Vagsheer

Recent advances by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) demonstrate the notable rise in India’s warship manufacturing industry. Two cutting-edge warships, the INS Nilgiri, the first of the Project 17A class stealth frigates, and the INS Surat, the fourth of the Project 15B class guided missile destroyers, were delivered by MDL to the Indian Navy on December 20, 2024. Both ships, which were built at MDL and designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, include advanced stealth capabilities and state-of-the-art technology.

This frigate’s cutting-edge design ideas enhance its stealth, maneuverability, and survivability. India’s increasing independence in defense manufacture is reflected in its construction.

With its advanced weapons and systems, this ship, which is a member of the guided missile destroyer fleet, strengthens India’s naval capabilities.

MDL is also getting ready to launch the sixth and last Kalvari-class submarine, the INS Vagsheer, which is anticipated to be put into service in early January 2025. Constructed under Project 75 in partnership with France’s Naval Group, the Vagsheer submarine is intended for a number of uses, such as intelligence collection and anti-surface warfare.

The Indian shipbuilding sector is expected to grow significantly, from a 2024 worth of $1.12 billion to a 2033 valuation of nearly $8 billion. Government programs to increase naval capabilities and defense production self-reliance are the main drivers of this rise. By 2030, the Indian Navy intends to add more than 180 ships, which will present substantial prospects for indigenous shipyards like MDL and other defense manufacturing companies.

In addition to increasing its capabilities with recent deliveries, India’s warship building industry is laying the groundwork for future developments that will support both international marine concerns and national security goals.
