An autonomous inertial guidance system with satellite navigation capability is anticipated to be included onto the missile. During the last flying phase, this sophisticated system might potentially incorporate terrain-mapping-based radar guidance, increasing its precision to within five meters of the target.
With a weight capacity of about 350 kg, the Iskander-1000 can carry a variety of warheads, including cluster and high-explosive fragmentation munitions. Its range might be increased with lighter warheads, possibly to 1,250–1,300 kilometers.
The missile is expected to have a top speed of 2,700 to 3,100 meters per second and be highly maneuverable while in flight, which will enable it to avoid being intercepted.
The Iskander-1000 is thought to have been developed in direct response to NATO’s military posture in Europe, especially when the United States placed long-range missiles in Germany. According to Russian officials, this missile will be stationed in key areas like Kaliningrad, putting a large portion of Central and Western Europe within striking distance.
