A major deal for ₹1,220.12 crore was signed by the Indian Ministry of Defence on February 20, 2025, with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the purchase of 149 Software-Defined Radios (SDRs) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).
The goal of this program is to improve the Coast Guard’s capabilities in a number of operational domains, such as fisheries management, marine environment protection, maritime law enforcement, and search and rescue operations.
Through high-speed data and encrypted audio channels, the SDRs will enable dependable and secure communication, enhancing situational awareness and teamwork among Coast Guard members.
The radios are designed to enhance interoperability for joint operations with the Indian Navy, allowing for more coordinated maritime defence efforts.
This procurement aligns with the Government of India’s “Blue Economy” objectives, reinforcing maritime security as a foundation for sustainable economic growth.
The contract supports India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing, aiming to boost local production capabilities and create job opportunities within the sector.
Shares of Bharat Electronics increased by about 2.88% after this contract was announced, indicating that investors were pleased with the company’s expanding order book and strategic significance in India’s defense environment. This agreement is seen as a crucial step in boosting national security and bolstering India’s domestic defense production capabilities.
