With the introduction of Nagastra-1, an indigenous loitering munition created by Solar Industries, the Indian Army has lately improved its tactical capabilities. This discovery marks an important turning point in India’s defense industry and demonstrates the nation’s dedication to military technology independence.
The Nagastra-1 is a fixed-wing, man-portable, electric unmanned aerial vehicle that weighs around 9 kg. With more than 75% indigenous content, it is made for surveillance and precision strikes and supports India’s “Make in India” campaign.
The UAV has two modes of operation: a 15-kilometer manual control range and a 30-kilometer autonomous mode.
It is appropriate for tactical missions due to its approximately 30-minute flight endurance.
With its 1 kilogram high-explosive fragmenting payload and GPS technology, the Nagastra-1 can hit targets up to 2 meters away, efficiently eliminating soft-skin targets.
At heights above 200 meters, its electric propulsion technology enables silent operation, making it challenging for attackers to detect.
A major benefit over many current systems is that this capability allows the UAV to be aborted and retrieved mid-flight, allowing for reuse.
The launch of Nagastra-1 coincides with the growing recognition of drone technology as an essential element of contemporary warfare. The system improves the tactical capabilities of the Indian Army, especially in situations involving asymmetric warfare like urban battle and counter-insurgency operations. The effective use of this loitering munition lessens dependency on foreign military technology while simultaneously increasing operational effectiveness.
Solar Industries is already working on advanced iterations of the Nagastra system, including Nagastra-2 and Nagastra-3, which are expected to offer enhanced performance and warhead capabilities. Additionally, the company is engaged in developing Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones under the Ministry of Defence’s Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured (IDDM) category.
