According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, India is creating 25 chipsets with its own intellectual property (IP), demonstrating the country’s impressive advancements in semiconductor technology.These initiatives, which concentrate on high-risk domains including Wi-Fi access and surveillance, are a component of the Design-Linked Incentive (DLI) program. In order to maintain security and move India away from a services-based economy and toward a product-based one, Vaishnaw emphasized the need of intellectual property ownership.The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Bangalore is leading 13 ongoing initiatives, and these chips will be produced locally by future semiconductor fabs.
The government has provided top-notch chip design tools to 240 educational institutions in an effort to encourage talent and creativity. At the Semiconductor Laboratory in Mohali, 20 student-developed semiconductors will be taped out, fostering confidence and opening the door for the next ten years of training 85,000 highly qualified engineers.
.The “Chips to Startup” (C2S) program, which aims to democratize chip design among 300 entities, including startups and academic institutions, is in line with this approach.
Additionally, thanks to the manufacturing-Linked Incentive (PLI) program, India’s electronics manufacturing has increased fivefold and its exports have increased sixfold during the past ten years.
In addition to creating 2.5 million employment, this program is anticipated to quadruple value addition in the next five years. Under the “Make in India, Make for the World” campaign, Vaishnaw emphasized India’s transition from import substitution to export-led development in electronics.
.Under the Semicon India initiative, the nation is also getting ready for the late 2025 introduction of its first domestic semiconductor chip. India’s progress towards semiconductor self-sufficiency will reach a significant milestone when the chips are produced at the Dholera manufacturing factory in Gujarat. Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) of Taiwan and TATA Electronics are working together on this project.Vaishnaw promised compliance with Supreme Court decisions and the RTI Act in response to worries over data privacy under the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, guaranteeing that data of public interest is kept available.
