As Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan get ready to sign a cooperative defense accord in Riyadh, speculation over the possibility of broader military cooperation among major Muslim-majority nations has increased.
The agreement is anticipated to be formalized on Friday, according to regional sources, raising concerns over whether it will serve as the basis for a larger military alliance that is frequently referred to as a “Islamic NATO.”
The purported deal expands on previous indications from Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif that Turkey and Qatar would be added to the current framework of defense and commercial cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
He said that talks were already in the advanced stages and might result in a more comprehensive regional security agreement.
