India’s Engine Race: Safran vs. Reliance-Rolls-Royce for AMCA: Military Venteran Evaluations

According to military veteran and strategic affairs analyst Col. Danvir Singh, Reliance-Rolls-Royce is competing with Safran-GTRE to develop a sovereign fighter engine, making propulsion the most difficult obstacle facing India’s AMCA program.

The competition isn’t only about who constructs it; it’s also about whether India can ultimately become an expert in the most challenging area of aerospace technology.

The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft program in India is about to reach a critical stage. The engine that will power the fighter is the problem, not the stealth airframe or avionics. India’s weakness in military aircraft has been acknowledged for decades.

Reliance Industries and Rolls-Royce declared their strategic intention to jointly develop and produce an indigenous combat engine for the AMCA just prior to Independence Day.

In order to provide end-to-end capabilities in design, development, manufacture, testing, production, and through-life support, the alliance suggests building a specialized Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India.

This signifies Rolls-Royce’s growing dedication to India’s aerospace industry and Reliance’s foray into military aircraft.

Along with the Safran-GTRE partnership, the announcement brings a new competitor to India’s fighter-engine competition. A 120 kilonewton high-thrust engine development contract for the AMCA MK-2 has already been awarded to Safran, subject to final Cabinet Committee on Security approval.

In contrast, the Reliance-Rolls-Royce proposal guaranties complete knowledge transfer, including vital expertise in single-crystal turbine blade design and hot-section metallurgy.

India’s propulsion problems are widely known. The TEJAS was forced to rely on imported GE F404 and F414 engines after the Kaveri engine program, which was introduced in the 1980s, was unable to achieve thrust and weight criteria.

The GE F414 is intended to power the AMCA MK-1, however upcoming models require a more potent 110–130 kN class engine with supercruise capability. India runs the risk of perpetuating the cycle of dependency in the absence of indigenous competence.

The Reliance-Rolls-Royce collaboration is presented as a step toward Atmanirbhar Bharat, the goal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç called the partnership a significant step in creating a strong, independent aerospace ecosystem, while Anant Ambani emphasized that India’s strategic autonomy demands sovereign capacity in crucial technologies.

The stakes are really high. India’s Air Force has only 29 squadrons out of a sanctioned strength of 42.5, while Pakistan is getting closer to introducing China’s J-35 stealth fighter. India may not be able to produce a fifth-generation fighter in time if engine development is delayed.

But the true question goes beyond who manufactures the engine. It concerns whether India can ultimately grasp the technological complexity of propulsion, from digital engine controls and combustion dynamics to sophisticated materials and turbine cooling.
