On January 9, 2025, BSF Jawans encountered a major clash with Bangladeshi cattle smugglers at the Khutadah Border Outpost in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The Jawans saw multiple smugglers trying to cross the border with cattle during the incident.
Armed with sharp-edged spears, the smugglers pushed forward despite orders to stop, attempting to break through the border fence. The smugglers fled into Bangladesh under cover of darkness after a BSF Jawan responded to this threat by firing a blank round as a warning.
In addition to successfully stopping the smuggling attempt, the BSF retrieved three sharp-edged spears that the attackers had left behind and ten bulls from Haryana. The attacks on BSF personnel along the India-Bangladesh border are part of a larger pattern.
The BSF has documented several such encounters in which they were forced to defend themselves and stop unlawful activity by using stun grenades and other defensive tactics.
According to a BSF spokesperson, these attacks are not unusual and expressed concern about the inaction of Bangladeshi authorities in spite of continuous talks to address the problems.
The spokesperson reaffirmed the dedication of BSF members to uphold border security and carry out their responsibilities with bravery and alertness.
