For upcoming SSNs and SSBNs, BARC plans to construct a powerful 190 MW submarine nuclear reactor in India.

By creating a new 190-MW submarine nuclear reactor, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is expanding India’s nuclear submarine capabilities. This reactor is a major improvement over the 83-MW reactors used in India’s first-generation Arihant-class submarines, and it is intended to power both the P-77 nuclear attack submarines (SSNs) and the S-5 ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs).

A scaled-up version of the previous design, the 190-MW reactor has two versions: one for the dynamic power demands of SSNs and another for the endurance-focused SSBNs.

The BARC’s new 190-MW nuclear reactor is expected to greatly improve the capabilities of the S-5 ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) and the P-77 nuclear attack submarines (SSNs).

Compared to previous versions, this reactor will offer a significant boost in power for the P-77 SSNs, enabling enhanced operating capabilities, speed, and stealth. The design of the reactor facilitates the incorporation of cutting-edge technologies like nuclear-electric propulsion (NEP), which may allow for more silent operations and improve the submarine’s capacity to carry out a variety of mission sets, such as land-attack and anti-shipping duties.
