Successful DEAL trials of C-Bank LOS datalink on the HS125-800 Hawker airborne platform

According to the DRDO Newsletter, the Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory (DEAL) in Dehradun performed successful C-Band LOS Datalink experiments on HS125-800 HAWKER aircraft as part of the DLAP Project at the Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) in Bangalore, in collaboration with industry partners.

Tracking, data throughput, and full-duplex audio communication in three CBand LOS Datalink flight missions.

The flights were highly successful, and full-duplex, error free data and voice communication were observed with tracking in GPS and RF tracking modes up to 250 km aerial distance.

The trials were conducted by the Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory (DEAL) in collaboration with industry partners and IIT-Delhi.

The primary focus was on establishing reliable communication between airborne platforms and ground stations using advanced datalink technologies.

Ground Trials: The first testing used ground-based communication between the Ground Earth Station (GES) and a moving vehicle to ensure system dependability before aerial applications.

Airborne Testing: The datalink system was installed aboard the HS125-800 Hawker, and three flight sorties were completed. These flights proved full-duplex, error-free data and voice transmission capability over lengths of up to 250 km.

Performance Metrics: The trials successfully tested tracking systems in both RF and GPS modes, proving reliable data throughput and voice communication throughout operations.

The successful experiments represent a significant leap in aerial communication technology, which may improve operating efficiency in the defence and civil aviation sectors. The integration of such technologies is intended to increase situational awareness and coordination among the numerous stakeholders in air traffic control.

These improvements are consistent with wider aspirations of improving national security through modern communication technology, particularly in vital areas such as defence.
