The German shipping company HS Schiffahrts UG & Co. KG has received MS Maria, the second ship in the eight-ship HS EcoFreighter program, from Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).

Senior officials from both parties attended the delivery event on August 12, 2026, in Kochi, where Dr. S. Harikrishnan, Director (Operations) of CSL, and Heinz Josef Schepers, Director of HS Schiffahrts UG & Co. KG, signed the Delivery and Acceptance Protocol.
The growth of Indo-German maritime collaboration and CSL’s growing reputation in the international shipbuilding industry are highlighted by this official transfer.
The MS Maria was designed by the Netherlands’ Groot Ship Design and constructed at CSL in accordance with the classification guidelines of DNV, one of the top marine certifying organizations in the world.
The ship is a 7,000 Deadweight Tonnage (DWT) ice-class multipurpose vessel (MPV) that can transport a variety of goods and is designed to function in difficult conditions. These are extremely adaptable for international trade and include project and heavy cargo, steel coils, containers, timber, paper, dry bulk commodities like coal and grain, and even hazardous items.
The vessel’s sloped stem with the “Groot Crossbow” design, which improves speed performance and fuel efficiency, is one of its distinguishing features. A transom stern that is optimized for stability and operational effectiveness complements the hull design. Flexible cargo arrangements are made possible by the ship’s single, sizable cargo hold, which has six moveable panels. This maximizes cargo adaptability by enabling the installation of grain bulkheads at various locations and establishing a tween-deck configuration.
A controllable-pitch propeller (CPP) is propelled by a medium-speed, four-stroke diesel engine via a reduction gearbox. This configuration guaranties dependable performance, fuel economy, and flexibility under various operating circumstances. The ship’s ability to operate in northern waters and other areas with harsh weather conditions is further expanded by its ice-class certification.
The release of MS Maria is a strategic victory for CSL as much as a technological accomplishment.
