EAM Jaishankar says India-US ties are “good” and calls Trump a “American Nationalist.”

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently called former President Donald Trump a “American nationalist” and voiced hope about the current condition of India-U.S. relations during a meeting at Hansraj College in New Delhi. Trump’s emphasis on American interests, according to Jaishankar, is consistent with a larger pattern in which the United States has traditionally assumed global obligations; he thinks this trend has to be reexamined for the good of American residents.

Jaishankar said that his recent trip to the U.S., when he was present at Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, was positive and that he was treated well, indicating that the two countries have a friendly relationship. Jaishankar further emphasized the positive nature of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal relationship with Trump, saying that their exchanges have been fruitful. Although opinions on some matters may differ, he said, many topics are in line with common interests, supporting the idea of a strong cooperation between the United States and India.
