Maldives President Muhammad Muizzu recently had a goodbye visit from outgoing Indian High Commissioner Munu Mahawar. President Muizzu recognized Mahawar’s important contributions to strengthening India-Maldives bilateral ties during this meeting, particularly at a pivotal time for both countries. Future cooperation opportunities were discussed, and India’s commitment to assisting the Maldives’ development projects was reaffirmed.
The Maldives-Indian relationship was reviving during Mahawar’s term, which started in November 2021, especially after President Muizzu’s state visit to India in October 2024.
A “Vision for Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership,” which aims to improve social welfare programs and business relations in the Maldives, was established as a result of this visit. Recent diplomatic initiatives have assisted in reestablishing ties between the two nations, despite early tensions brought on by Muizzu’s pro-China views and his call for a “India out” strategy.
A 1998 batch Indian Foreign Service officer named G Balasubramanian will succeed Munu Mahawar.
