LRDE and BEL collaborated to develop an indigenous VHF radar, which was formally launched.

On January 29, 2025, the Indigenous Very High Frequency (VHF) Radar was formally unveiled at Bharat Electronics Limited’s (BEL) plant in Ghaziabad, marking a major breakthrough for India’s defense capabilities. This radar system, which was jointly created by BEL and the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), is a significant advancement in Indian defense technology since it is specifically made to improve air defense by identifying stealth aircraft.

The radar can identify aircraft designed to elude traditional radar systems because it operates in the VHF band (30 to 300 MHz). In order to combat contemporary stealth technologies, this capacity is essential.

It provides early warnings of possible dangers by tracking aircraft objects more than 100 nautical miles away. Its design greatly diminishes the efficacy of stealth aircraft against it, even though certain detection capabilities are classified.

Two TATRA vehicles have the radar installed, allowing for quick deployment and flexibility in a range of operational settings. Its strategic advantage in dynamic security scenarios is strengthened by its mobility.

The system’s ability to continuously monitor airspace guarantees thorough coverage and very accurate surveillance of airborne threats. Maintaining situational awareness and national security in the air depends on this function.

The radar’s capabilities, including its ability to detect low-observable targets, were shown during the launch event. The importance of this achievement for India’s defense industry was underlined by a senior LRDE official, who said it demonstrates the creative energy and technological know-how inherent in India’s military research and manufacturing environment. The radar will be on display at Aero India 2025, giving international defense experts a chance to see its cutting-edge technology up close.

India’s strategic stance in regional security dynamics is improved by this new radar system, which also fortifies the nation’s air defense network and establishes it as a major player in the worldwide radar technology market.
