The upcoming Axiom-4 mission will involve ISRO and ESA working together on microgravity research.

As part of the forthcoming Axiom-4 mission, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) have announced a partnership for microgravity research. With Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla as the pilot, this mission is especially noteworthy because it would be India’s first crewed trip to the International Space Station (ISS).

An partnership between ISRO and ESA focuses on training astronauts, implementing missions, and carrying out microgravity research studies. The goal of this collaboration is to support collaborative scientific efforts throughout the Axiom-4 mission, which is scheduled to launch no early than the fall of 2025.

A number of microgravity tests have been selected to be carried out during the trip. These include research on how cyanobacteria develop in microgravity and how microgravity affects food crop seeds. To guarantee safety in human spaceflight operations, these tests are now being evaluated.

It is anticipated that the partnership will improve research prospects in a number of domains, such as biotechnology, physical sciences, material sciences, and human health. It complements ISRO’s overarching objectives under the Human Space Program and the Gaganyaan project, which seeks to

Former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, ISRO’s Shubhanshu Shukla, and two ESA mission specialists, Tibor Kapu from Hungary and Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski from Poland, will lead the Axiom-4 mission. The crew will conduct outreach and scientific research while on board the ISS for up to 14 days.

A SpaceX Dragon spaceship is scheduled to launch the mission from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center. It intends to open the door for future missions involving both ISRO and ESA and is a major milestone in international cooperation for human spaceflight.

This collaboration demonstrates the expanding relevance of private missions in furthering scientific research in microgravity environments, as well as the burgeoning space exploration partnership between India and Europe.
